Blackhawk War to be featured at Nov. 9 history program in Dixon — New Lenox Community news

Jerry Schnake of Dixon will present a program titled “The Blackhawk War” at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9, at the Lee County Historical and Genealogical Society office. The war, from April 6 to Aug. 27, 1832, brought local settlers into conflict with the Sauk, Fox, Kickapoo and Winnebago Indians as the Indians tried to reclaim their ancestral village and land. The victory of the U.S. troops ended the settlement of the Indians here and allowed white settlers to settle Illinois and Wisconsin. The public is welcome, and there is ample parking nearby. There is no fee to attend. For information, call 284-1134. The office is located at 113 S. Hennepin Ave. in Dixon.
